Welcome to Bend-La Pine Schools
I am both delighted and humbled to introduce myself as Bend-La Pine Schools' superintendent and to welcome you and all families as the 2015-16 year gets underway. This year will be a journey for all of us and it is one I am excited to spend together.
I believe our schools are strongest when we recognize the assets and challenges that each student possesses. Treating each student as an individual is something I am passionate about and I believe this focus will help all of our students build the skills they need to succeed in the 21st Century.
In the pages of this year's Family Handbook and Calendar, we are celebrating students on an individual level and highlighting their achievements and character. Each student shared something inherent about themselves, declaring "I am brave," "I am curious," "I am a leader."
The students in the pages of the calendar should inspire us all. I know they inspire me -- from the Ponderosa fifth-grader whose kind heart leads him to help other students every day ("I am a helper") to the Westside Village seventh-grader who had a bumpy start to his education but is now carving out his own niche and gaining confidence every day ("I am on the right path").
Like the students within the calendar, I want to share a bit about myself and who "I am." I am a builder. As I start my time as superintendent, I will build upon the many successful programs already in place. I also aim to build lasting relationships with families and staff, knowing that our close-knit bonds help make us strong.
I am a visionary. I dream big for our students and for the kind of skills and knowledge they will need to help them succeed in the future. I am a champion for technology and forward-thinking learning.
I am a family man. My wife and five (yes five!) children are my heart and are the drivers behind my passion for education. I see the importance of the work I do every day when looking into the faces of my children.
I am a champion of our successes. We have many student and staff accomplishments worth celebrating - from a Bend Senior High bookkeeper receiving the OSEA Employee of the Year award to the Class of 2015 earning more than $8 million in scholarships. We are home to several winners of the prestigious Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and 86 percent of our schools earned top marks on Oregon School Report Cards in 2014.
I am part of a team. As a leader, you are only as strong as the people around you. I am fortunate to have a great team supporting and collaborating with me. I don't do this work alone, and that is something for which I am deeply grateful.
I am a student. I love to learn and believe we can never have too much knowledge or understanding.
I am community-minded. As we make decisions for our schools, we consider the impact those choices will have on our entire community. I am also a collaborator who works alongside staff within our local cities, county and parks district.
I am a listener. The voices of our staff, parents, students and community members are important to me. I have held conversations with more than 100 of our staff members to listen and learn from them. I want to hear from you and my door is always open.
I am Bend-La Pine Schools.
